When substance abuse: Is comorbid ( coexists with) adhd, it's wise to use non-stimulant medications to control adhd symptoms, even though oral long-acting methylphenidate (concerta, focalin, (dexmethylphenidate) metadate) & amphetamine (vyvanse) preparations don't cause a " high, because the delivery systems don't allow a flood of Dopamine in the striatum of the brain. Addiction counseling & support are needed.

It depends.: If ADHD symptoms (especially impulsivity) seem related to the substance use, then treating the ADHD might help reduce the odds of trouble. Or sometimes the substance use is a way of reducing ADHD symptoms (eg methamphetamine, nicotine) or ADHD related symptoms (eg alcohol or THC for anxiety). The key? Work with a competent, trusted clinician and be as honest as you possibly can.
