In Kidney Failure: Dialysis and kidney transplants are both treatments called "renal replacement therapies." this means they take over kidney function after the kidneys have stopped working adequately. Dialysis can be done in an emergency - or as a temporary measure in some cases of reversable kidney injury. Transplantation takes more time to orchestrate - but in the long run, it's a better treatment for most.

Kidney failure: Dialysis is intermittent replacement of kidney function that is used when a person's kidneys no longer function well enough to keep them alive. Failure of the kidneys can be temporary or permanent. Transplantation is only considered for permanent kidney failure. It involves a major operation and the use of tricky anti-rejection medications. You also need a donor organ - very severe shortage now.
