Many things: A dental exam should include examination of the teeth, gums, (including probing), the jaw joint, and muscles, and bite. It may include taking x-rays from time to time and asking if there are any problems. If you are unsure a 2nd opinion may be appropriate.

Lots!: A proper dental exam should examine both hard and soft tissues of the mouth and the head and neck. On the outside, your lymph nodes, tmj, and overall facial symmetry should be checked. In the mouth, your teeth, gums, under the tongue and along the sides of the tongue, and the cheeks and throat should be examined. Depending on your risk factors, x-rays may be taken and examined as well.

Agreed and More...: I agree with the previous doctor's assessment of a proper dental examination. Some other characteristics of a thorough dental exam would be: intraoral camera photos, digital x-rays, instructional videos to explain pathology(s)/treatment options, explanation of insurance benefits (if any), and payment options via 3rd party credit companies that offer 0% interest for extended periods.
