Two types: Gout should be treated in the painful stage with antiinflammatories such as indomethicin, and colchicine, and then a long term medicine such as Allopurinol should be used to suppress the attacks and build up of uric acid deposits. Many people wait many years for Allopurinol if the attacks are very far apart ie years. Joint damage can be prevented. Important to make a definite diagnosis joint tap.

Colchicine: For acute attacks of gout, best treatment is colchicine. Nsaids such as Indocin (indomethacin) can also help. Allopurinol is a medication used to treat chronic gout. It should not be started when there is an active flare as it can worsen the flare.
