Fluctuating hearing: Loss from chronic middle ear effusion does not impact a child's intent to communicate socially, nor to engage in reciprocal social interaction or pretend play. See the m-chat on firstsigns.Org. A 12-month-old should point for desired objects; a 14-16 month-old should point to share interest & look at items to which parents point. Joint attention (shared interest) precedes social communication.
