Life: Once you have a hermmorrhoid it stays there unless you remove it or get rid of it by banding. It is like a varicose vein in the legs. It may get larger or smaller but stay tgere.

Forever, but...: Hemorrhoids are dilated veins that like varicose veins in legs are stretched out and baggy. They may be stretched beyond repair but that does not mean they are a problem. They become a problem when they become inflamed or clotted. And those flare ups are usually limited to a week or so and resolve with softer bowel movements, creams, etc. If flareups happen too frequently then seek surgery.
