Possible: Fibromuscular dysplasia is the abnormal growth of cells in the walls of arteries that cause them to narrow or bulge. The carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain, are commonly affected. A branch of this, the ophthalmic artery supplies blood to your optic nerve and eye. If its affected it can cause ischemia- poor blood flow, which presents as optic nerve swelling and visual loss.
