Safe levels: Safe levels are more important than normal levels. If your blood count drops too much, the dose of methotrexated will likely be reduced.

Neither: The goal is to control the disease for which it is prescribed. The laboratory testing is to assure safety - that is to assure that the treatment is not compromising health, in this case, ability to fight infection, prevent bleeding and maintain oxygenation.
