Pain: Pulled muscle, regardless of place, will cause pain. If it doesn't hurt, you didn't pull anything. Of course, there are other reasons for pain. But if pain doesn't go away w/rest, ice, compression & elevation (rice), it's best to get evaluated. If pain in back is associated w/fever, numbness, tingling, weakness and/or incontinence (loss of bowel/bladder control), need emergent care immediately.

Pain: Pain in the muscles to the side of the spine without radiation or weakness in the legs(radicular signs) associated with spasms usually is a muscle pull. If you have nerve like symptoms or problems with your bowel or bladder you should see a spine specialist immediately could be a sign of a serious problem.
