Can you pull a back muscle from coughing too much?

Unfortunately, yes: Severe coughing can easily lead to other problems including pulled muscle in the back or chest wall. The high pressures generated from coughing can lead to hoarse voice, irritation and more cough. Severe coughing can lead to vomiting. I had one patient who coughed so hard, she fractured a rib. Therefore, it's important to identify the cause of the cough and treat it appropriately.
