Depends on cause: Acutely, many people with bladder infections have trouble with passing their urine and if promptly treated they do not develop kidney failure. Usually when you cannot pass your urine chronically there is a blockage of the drainage system, from kidney stones, neurologic problems preventing the bladder from working, tumors or prostate disease. As a consequence kidney failure can develop.
