Protect the 50%: Now that you know you have reduced kidney function you have the opportunity to protect what is left. This is very important. The key things you should do - with a doctor's help - is to keep your weight, blood pressure and sugar (glucose) in good control. It is also important to avoid any medications that can harm the remaining 50%, particularly nsaids - like ibuprofen, advil, or motrin.

Kidneys at 50%: At a functioning level of 50%, one does not need a kidney transplant or to go on dialysis. Go to a nephrologist to find out what your glomerular filtration rate is by having a 24 hour urine collection done. Renal patients do not start dialysis until they lose 90% of their kidney function. If you treat the condition(s) that caused your kidney disease effectively, you may not lose any more function.
