It depends: There are many causes of chest pain with deep breathing. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the membrane lining the chest wall and surrounding the lungs that often leads to sharp chest pain when you take a deep breath, sneeze or cough. In young healthy people, a respiratory infection (viral or bacterial) may cause pleurisy. Other common causes of chest pain are chest muscle strain and costochondritis.

Chest pain : Usually indicates irritation in muscle between the ribs. Sometimes can be from deeper structures like covering over lungs.
