Go with the exercise: Not everyone will agree, but my reading of the latest articles on triglycerides is that if they're the only abnormality, there's no consensus on a need to treat. Everybody on healthtap will probably agree that health doesn't come from taking pills. And the more recent "fish oil" studies i've seen for lipid stuff has been disappointing. Getting fit will make friends, feel good, look great.

TRIG are tricky: Very complex answer. Need to have idea of how severe the elevation is and what your coronary artery disease risks are. This medication may not be the best for you. If your elevations are < 500 and your LDL is elevated a statin is probably a better choice. In any case diet, exercise and wt loss are your best friend. If trig are > 500 you should consider seeing a specialist.

Not effective: Sorry to burst the bubble, but we can take handfuls of costco fish oil pills & there is no way that there is near enough of the right kind of omega-3 in those to actually effectively lower triglycerides to any measurable degree. (they might help your arthritis, tho!) you're more on track with the exercise and weight loss. If you really have high triglycerides, then get a prescription from your fp.

Fish oil supplements: Fish oil supplements help lower triglycerides, raise heart-protective HDL cholesterol, promote heart health, improve joint function. Fish oil supplementation along with regular cardiovascular exercise can help you lower the triglycerides.
