Retainer: Some people believe that wisdom teeth cause crowding when they come in. I disagree. It would take tremendous forces in each arch for 2 teeth to move all 14 others. Our bodies are dynamic and constantly changing. This includes the position of teeth. As we get older lower front teeth crowd more. This is why orthodontists make you wear retainers to keep your teeth straight.

Another opinion?: It is argued that a wisdom tooth will not move the 7 teeth in front of it. Teeth naturally move to the middle over time. If, your dentist wouldn't remove your wisdom teeth he is basing the treatment that they might not be causing you any pain or problems. But, if you are unhappy about what your dentist is telling you...Go get another opinion. I don't recommend removal either, unless necessary.

Wrongheaded: Extracting teeth does not magically straighten teeth. There are good and just reasons for removing or not removing wisdom teeth, but removing them does not straighten front teeth. Removing premolar teeth in a crowded arch does not cause them to straighten or to stay straight. If extractions required, must be part of an active orthodontic treatment/retention program.
