Complex Joint: The shoulder is a complex joint, & many conditions/ injuries (rotator cuff injury, bursitits, tendonitis, labrum, etc). Can cause pain/ weakness. Some injuries of the shoulder occur due to injury & some are from overuse. I suggest you see an orthopedist. Pain & weakness manifest in many of the listed, but is certainly present w/ rc problems. http://drmarkgalland.com/category/shoulder/.

Shoulder pain: Can also be caused by issues in the neck. Would recommend evaluation by pain specialist in addition to orthopedist.

Muscle strain: Injury to the supraspinatus muscle of the shoulder girdle can result in this pattern. See an osteopath to get diagnosed. An MRI can detect injury to the supraspinatus muscle and tendon; from acute or repetative stress.

Rotator cuff: This could be a variety of conditions, with a rotator cuff (tendon) problem (tendonitis, partial tear) being a common one. Labral (cartilage) tear, biceps tendonitis nnd a frozen shoulder are other common considerations. A through history, physical exam & x-rays will provide the answer 80-90% of the time. See a doc well-versed in shoulder conditions.
