Tmj pain : I would never recommend it unless it becomes absolutely in able yo open and chew food , i would seek the help of a dentist who can treat TMJ with the help of an orthodontist and reputable oral surgeon should surgery is your only option , most of patients who have had the surgery did not improve and some got worse, good luck.

Don't : Surgery will only lock you into a permanent damaged condition. Better to be treated by a dentist that routinely treats TMJ with functional orthopedic type applicances. Many dentist treat tmj, however only about 5% are really good at it.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: You should have a comprehensive exam and proper radiographs then try reversible procedures like orthotic guards first before considering surgery.

Consult with dentist: First consult with your dentist to determine if surgery is indicated. He will recommend the surgeon.
