Last resort: Surgery for TMJ problems should always be the absolute last resort! first see a dentist who specializes in tmj\tmd for an evaluation and appropriate conservative treatment.

Very few: The only time i would recommend open joint surgery is in cases (after all other more conservative approaches were tried) where there is severe restriction of opening or where the jaw joint has completely resorbed and is non- functional. Otherwise, as long as function is acceptable and a joint is present, i would continue to work with more non-invasive therapies.

TMJ Surgery: Before considering TMJ surgery, have you been fitted for a dental orthotic? There are several types of orthotic designs available to you depending on the type of TMJ dysfunction you have been diagnosed with. Make sure you visit with a dentist that is specialized in TMJ problems before considering surgery as an option. Tmj surgery is not always predictable and it may not alleviate your pain.

TMJ: Severe pain in the joint, continuous locking jaw are some of the reasons. But first obtain a panoramic x-ray them MRI if needed to evaluate the joint. Splints should not be used with every TMJ disorder.

Severe symptoms: The need for surgery is related to how much the problem bothers you. And if other non-surgical methods have been exhausted. There are some indications for surgery rather than conservative methods. See a TMJ expert for guidance. Get other opinions.
