Altered activity: Breathing in most infants through adults, progresses quietly without most people noticing.Once you notice breathing they are breathing about 2x as fast or starting to work to breathe. Once a kid quits playing to concentrate on breathing it is early distress. If they won't eat or drink because it interferes with breathing effort, they are in big trouble.

Follow your gut: Moms are usually able to recognize abnormalities in their children by instinct. The first sign of a child in respiratory distress is usually decreased oral intake. Fast breathing "tachypnea", indrawing between the ribs "retractions", anxiousness, and changing color to blue are all indications that the infant needs to see a doctor urgently.
