They may: A meniscal tear can certainly cause pain with the stress placed on the knee going up and down stairs.

Possibly: Meniscus tears usually cause catching, locking or the feeling of instability to the knee. Swelling is also very commion. Of course having pain when going up or down staitrs could also be related to a meniscus tear.
