Panic disorder?: I've known many anxious people who are afraid to fall asleep. They are hypervigilant for fear that something dreadful will happen. Many such people are dealing with previous trauma issues, and also the need to be "in control" at all times. The best help for this is seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist for good assessment -- plus receiving individual treatment, including medications if needed.
