Unclear: Hip pain can present as knee pain in some patients, however this is usually on the inner side of the knee (due to irritation of the obturator nerve). When i say inner side i mean the side that contacts the other knee when your knees are straight. If the pain is on the outer side it may be irritation of the it band or arthritis. A good exam should help determine the location of the pain.

Knee pain: You don't get 'nerve pain' from hip arthritis. This could be knee arthritis, a sprained lateral coll. Ligament or meniscus injury. Ice for 10-12 minutes 3x/day could be helpful at the acute phase (3-4 days after injury). If knee pain persists over two weeks then an orthopedist consult is necessary. Good luck.
