Shunting: In order to keep our core body temperature stable the body constricts the perireferral blood vessels in our skin and extremities to shunt blood to our vital organs, like the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. When blood flow decreases in the perifery the temperature of the tissue does likewise. Consequently, the metabolic rate decreases locally and you sense a chill.
