Polycystic ovaries: Polycystic appearing ovaries on ultrasound can be a normal finding in young women. Polycystic ovarian syndrome consists of a combination of this appearance as well as irregular cycles and possibly excess hair growth.

It's possible ...: Pcos (the syndrome) means 2 out of 3 of: 1. Irregular periods 2. Clinical signs like acne, hair growth and/or blood tests showing too much male-type hormones (androgens) 3. Ultrasound appearance of polycystic ovaries: high volumes or antral follicle counts. Polycystic ovaries (pco) is the ultrasound signs alone. See a fertility specialist (rei) if trying to conceive, or to get a definitive answer.

Possible : A woman can have cysts on her ovaries but not have the syndrome which means having at least two of the following: signs of excess testosterone (abnormal hair growth, acne), infrequent or absent periods, and infertility.
