Possible cavity: If any type of stimulus causes tooth pain, it is possible that a cavity may be present. As a periodontist, I am sure you will not be surprised that i recommend tobacco cessation for your oral and overall health benefit. I recommend your dentist evaluate the tooth that is bothering you for possible treatment.

Tobacco or topical ?: Smokeless tobacco has sugar, which can cause tooth pain. Some topical applications can irritate both teeth and gums.

Gum damage: Chewing/smokeless tobacco can cause receeding gums, exposing sensitive root tissue to the environment. The tobacco also contains many ingredients that can irritate the tooth. My advice....Quit, like now. Its a habit that can lead to oral cancer and frankly, there are no positive health benefits to using smokeless tobacco, or any tobacco really.
