Sleep study yet?: I would first want to know if he has had a sleep study. Given his size, he is at risk for sleep apnea and this should be evaluated. If you notice snoring or irregular breathing at night then the likelihood is even higher that he has it. It can lead to poor sleep quality, fatigue, etc. Ambien (zolpidem) may make it worse. If he has no sleep apnea, then there are other agents for sleep that could be tried.

No: No, this is habit forming medication if u take it every day it will stop working , let him practice sleep hygiene and discuss his medication with his prescriber.
