Not uncommon : It is common for a woman to have a pregnancy loss or spontaneous abortion. The concept of the "blighted ovum" is a lay term that suggests the pregnancy has occurred, but no obvious evidence of a pregnancy is identified within the uterine cavity. It does not reflect an ectopic pregnancy. Perhaps 20% of known pregnancies are lost. "anembryonic" pregnancies perhaps are 1/4 of these or 5% overall.
