Kidney stones: Treatment options for calcium oxylate stones are dictated by the size, location and density of the stone. Eswl (shock wave lithotripsy) is often effective for small to moderate size stones in the kidney or upper ureter. Large stones in the kidney may require pcnl (keyhole surgery with scope through the back). Stones in the lower ureter often require ureteroscopic extraction.
