After surgery, will my 14 year old son be admitted to the hospital if he is dizzy & confused from anesthesia and stays that way for hours?

Yes: Should be admitted and observed and hydrated until he is alert and oriented.

Possibly.: However, many common, treatable things can cause a patient to be dizzy and confused immediately postoperatively. An example would be a low blood pressure, which can usually be treated with IV fluids. Whether or not he gets admitted will depend on how severe the reaction is, and whether or not a cause is identified which can be treated satisfactorily in the recovery room.

Only if needed.: Pediatric patients are much more sensitive to anesthetics than adults. Because of this they can have more severe reactions to anesthesia. Discuss your concerns with your anesthesiologist before the procedure starts. Your child will only be allowed to go home when both the anesthesiologist and you are satisfied with his condition.
