Increased density: Usually people refer to lung with no vventilation as being whited out. Air in the lung is usually black. Atelectasis (collapse), fluid, edema, pneumonia or mass are usually white or increased in density. Usually atelectais or loss of volume causes a shift of heart toward the same side as white out, and volume increasers such as pneumonia, fluid, or tumor cause push of heart toward opposite side.
