Possibly viral: Often a viral lesion, caused by the herpes virus hsv i or ii has similar tingling before an ulceration or cold sore erupts. If you have a history of cold sores, fever blisters, etc, this can explain what is happening. If this is persisting without visible lesions, there may be a neuropathy or abnormality in a nerve. I would see your dentist to evaluate your mouth and if nothing is detected, md.

Herpes: Herpes outbreak/cold sores will often start as a tingling sensation before the lesions appear. Herpes simplex is the virus that causes cold sores and mouth lesions. Other types of herpes virus cause other things like shingles and chicken pox or sexually transmitted disease. Herpes lives in nerve tracts, breaking out when resistence is down. It's why there is a tingling before the lesion shows.
