A member asked:

What negative side effects would giving an infant reglan (metoclopramide) for 12 months?

None at nl doses: Although any medication can have side effects for individual patients, they are generally abrupt & noticed early & end up ending the medication use. For the routine patient on Reglan (metoclopramide) for long duration, no specific issues are likely. When given in excess amounts (>5xnl)over weeks or months some neurologic impairment & developmental delay may be seen.

Use w/caution: Can cause neurologic, heart rhythm problems in adults and children, especially with prolonged use (> 12 weeks). Some are not necessarily reversible. In general, use lowest dose, for shortest period of time as possible, and switch to other meds if reasonable, .

DO NOT USE!!: Reglan (metoclopramide) has a Black Box Warning from the FDA. This is only used when a drug poses serious side effects. Reglan (metoclopramide) can cause tardive dyskinesia. The internet and chat rooms are filled with discussions of supplements or medications to increase breast milk. Most don't work or are outright dangerous. It makes no sense to treat yourself AND YOUR BABY with medication for a non-illness.
