Derm exam: Ideally, one goes to a dermatologist, who examines your entire skin for concerning areas. If any areas are identified, a small portion is removed (biopsy) and sent for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist for definitive answer.

Examination: The first step is a complete skin examination by a dermatologist. Any suspicious skin lesion are biopsies by removing a small portion of the lesion. These biopsies are examined by a pathologist for the presence of cancer.
