Tough question: Those of us in practice for more than 20 years probably remember discussions of whether children that age could even be depressed based on cognitive models of derpession, but times have changed and certainly we do believe even young children can be depressed. Ruling out medical is 1st step, experienced pediatric psychiatrist and pediatric psychologist is 2nd.

Sadness withdrawal a: 3 yo's most oren would seen withdrawn , maybe sad or aggressive.Sleep and or appetite alterations, lack of engagement. I would start with your pediatrician, if not receptive (3 yo's can be depressed) look for mental health professional experienced with young children.Call a local medical school or look on the internet for referral source of pediatrician is not helpful. 1st stabalize environment.
