CT contrast: Here are a few thoughts: 1) it is possible to be allergic to ct contrast material; fortunately, radiology departments are prepared to respond to this possibility, 2) people with impaired kidney function may sustain further kidney injury from the exposure to ct contrast, and 3) people on the diabetes drug metformin will be asked not to take this drug for a couple of days surrounding the scan.

Uncommon: The contrast or "dye" that is injected into the vein for a ct scan is very safe. A small percentage of patients may have an allergy to the iodine in the contrast. Another small subset of patients with poorly functioning kidneys should not receive this type of contrast as it may further damage the kidneys. If people are adequately screened before receiving the contrast, it is usually harmless.
