Sounds like he's: Looking for evidence, but the only proof is a biopsy. Ct-scans reveal lumps, in lungs or the mediastinum, wher the heart, swallowing tube and lymph nodes live. Size and architecture point to or against cancer. Pet/ct follows a biopsy. They must know that there is cancer first, then look for the legitimate treatments.

Hard to say: It's hard to answer your question without knowing all the specifics and seeing the ct images. When they say "they can't see bronchial tube" it probably means that a bronchus is obstructed on ct. Bronchoscopy is reasonable to see it it's a mucus plug (from sputum) or a tumor obstructing the tube. Lymph nodes (hilar or mediastinal) can be reactive to pneumonia or cancer so it's hard to tell.
