Early hypothyroidism: If the elevated TSH persists, it generally indicates early hypothyroidism, which can easily be diagnosed and treated by your doctor.

Hypothyroidism: The TSH test is10 times more sensitive for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism that the t4. The TSH is reported on a log scale so that small changes in the TSH value are caused by relatively big changes in the blood level. This is a reflection of the pituitary being extremely sensitive to change in the T3 (liothyronine) level if you have symptoms it would be wise to seek treatment.

How high? Free T4: Total T4 depends on thyroid binding globulins and may be elevated in pregnancy, contraceptive pill intake etc. If TSH is normal and you do not have any symptoms, you can leave it alone. At your next visit with your doctor you may discuss getting free T4 and T3 (liothyronine) done for confirmation of normal status.

A 50-year-old member asked:

What is a normal range for TSH and T4 levels?

Depends: It really depends on the assay used to check the levels. Most assays have a range for example from 0.3-->3. Some have up to 5. Most often there is no need to treat unless the number is > 10 unless the patient is pregnant or symptomatic. For Free T4 you need to see the reference range as it can vary from lab to lab quite a bit depending on the assay used.
