Soft tissue injury: Much would depend on what type of injury you had i.E did you bang it, twist it, pull it etc.. ? X-rays only show injury to bones, so injuries to ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves will not show up. A good history and exam by a hand surgeon will tell a lot. If needed an MRI could help with the diagnosis of soft tissue injuries. Best of luck.

X-rays can be wrong: Some fractures, especially in this location, do not show up immediately on x-ray. If it still hurts, especially in the hollow just above where your thumb takes off from your hand, you should have it x-rayed again. Meanwhile, wear a splint.
