Only if necessary: I would only operate if there is a concern that the hernia will incarcerate (get stuck) and possibly strangle bowel. This could be deadly. On the other hand, the risk/benefit ratio is affected by your medical risk. Some 93 year olds are healthier than others. And some post-bypass patients are healthier than before surgery. Only have surgery if you cardiologist feels you can handle it.

Depends: When you have a hernia, it is important to determine what the goals of operation would be. Are you trying to relieve an existing problem, to prevent hernia from getting worse? Ways in which it could get worse would be enlargement, blockage of the intestines, and even skin ulceration or pain. You should see your doctor to talk about the goals the risks and benefits of either observation or operation.

See below: Recurrent hernias are unfortunate yet treatable. In your case, if your cardiologist gives you preoperative clearance to have the surgery, there should be no reason why it cannot be done. Good luck!
