Conservative is best: Rest, heat, supportive medications (muscle relaxants or antiinflammatory if needed) are the best course of action. Physical therapy can also be helpful. I'd leave the prolotherapy or any other injection as a last resort.

Can heal but also...: Yes, ligaments & tendons may heal on their own, but to aid this process certain supplements may help, including manganese, vit. C, zinc, lysine, proline & msm. Homeopathy may help too- try traumeel & inflamyar creams as well as internal remedies-see http://debbybruck.Hubpages.Com/hub/homeopathy-for-sprains-and-sports-injury if these don't help, prolotherapy should, though prolozone is even better!

Prolotherapy: Prolotherapy can strengthen and stabilize sacroiliac ligaments that have been stretched or injured. In my clinical experience i perform 4-6 prolotherapy injections over an 8-12 week timeframe. (usually used in combination with a physical therapy program). I use dextose as the proliferation and i see good results. The only caveat is that the patient must refrain from all nsaids during injections.
