Hives: Ever had them before? New socks, shoes, detergents? Short term treatment is over the counter anti itch creams and addition of an oral antihistamine once to twice daily.

Antihistamine: Assuming this is new for you, the most common cause is infection (often minor and transient) resulting in activation of innate immune pathways in skin that trigger mast cells. Usually, hives resolve and we never know the cause. If there are no contraindications, 25-50mg Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may help. Zyrtec and Claritin are longer acting and less sedating. Get a virtual appointment if this is recurring.
