Visual prompts & ABA: Both help. " steps to independence" is a book that divides self-help tasks into steps; reward his attempts at mastery (e.g., "screen time" only after "work, " till 30 min. Before bedtime & < 2 hrs./day). Gear verbal & visual prompts to you son's intellectual ability. Help him, but don't do it for him. Give him a desired object only when he signs or says a word/ approximation. Ignore protests.
