Variable treatment: There are 2 kinds, Alpha and beta thalassemias. Severe thalassemias require blood transfusions or stem cell transplant. Thalassemia trait has mild anemia and doesn't need treatment. In between this, occasional blood transfusions may be needed. Iron overload from blood transfusions can be a problem.
