See a hematologist: Treatments for thalassemias depend on the type and severity of the disorder, there are many types and subtypes. People who are carriers or who have Alpha or beta thalassemia trait have mild or no symptoms, and need little or no treatment. There are standard treatments for moderate and severe forms of thalassemia, including blood transfusions, iron chelation, therapy, and Folic Acid supplements.

Variable treatment: There are 2 kinds, Alpha and beta thalassemias. Severe thalassemias require blood transfusions or stem cell transplant. Thalassemia trait has mild anemia and doesn't need treatment. In between this, occasional blood transfusions may be needed. Iron overload from blood transfusions can be a problem.
