Temporal arteritis: In temporal arteritis lots of the blood vessels in the head and brain are inflammed. For biopsy, the temporal artery is picked because 1. Often affected 2. Easily accessed 3. Close by blood vessels can re-channel the blood to the areas supplied by the temporal artery. However, there are many other blood vessles, particularly in the brain that carry blood to tissues where no other artery flows.

Great Question!: The problem in ta is not the lack of blood flow through the temporal artery, but rather the inflammation that causes it, which is systemic. We remove the temporal artery bit as treatment if ta, but to send to pathology to confirm the diagnosis.
