NSAIDs and/or...: Antiinflammatories can certainly help. For the hands they have compression gloves you could try. Occupational therapy can help. For the thumb, a well placed cortisone injection in the joint can help. If you can find someone that does those under ultrasound guidance, even better.

Also splints: Splinting the thumb is also very helpful. If it is the base of your thumb, close to the wrist, a wrist and thumb splint, or a short opponens splint (pictured) will support and protect the painful joint.
