It's okay: The dangers of tobacco smoke to children begin when the smoke is sufficiently irritating to the lungs to provoke asthma, infection and so forth. I hate a stinky person too, but junior probably wasn't harmed. Now that you're new parents, this is a great time to put old bad habits away and renew your love for one another. Best wishes.

A one-time incident: Is unlikely to cause harm, but chronic third-hand smoke is something to discuss calmly with dad. Toxic chemicals in smoke seep into hair, skin, and clothes (making them smell). Your baby can breathe in these toxins when dad holds him or absorb them when he's in contact with household surfaces that have adsorbed nicotine vapors, which can pose a cancer risk when they react with other chemicals.
