Prevent brain damage: Many heavy drinkers become deficient in b1 & this can cause permanent brain damage; thus taking b1 (ideally as part of a b complex) can prevent this. I don't think it will do much to help with hangovers. 30% of alcoholics have pyroluria & treating this can reduce cravings. High doses of b3 may also reduce cravings.
