My scan read these things: what is focal atrophy of the renal poles and small cysts on upper poles?

Scan: It means that at some point you possibly had an injury, like infection in kidney caused scar tissue to develop, causing focal atrophy (shrinkage). Simple cysts are very common. 50% of people over age of 50 have small cysts in their kidneys. Nothing to be worried or follow up.

Benign: Cysts are common and of no concern. Atrophy can be the result of previous infections of reflux of urine from the bladder to the kidneys (usually occurs in childhood).
