? rectal bleeding: While rare bright red rectal bleeding as in small streaks on the toilet paper is usually benign and caused by such things as hemorrhoids or small tears such as fissures, it is difficult to determine these causes by yourself. It is worth a trip to your pcp or GI (gastroenterologist) on a day immediately following when this happens to assist them in helping you determine the cause.

Hemorrhoids: If you are referring to bleeding when having a bowel movement then it is likely hemorrhoids. You are 42 so talk to your doctor. Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of death. You state then when you go to the doctor everything is ok. It might be better for the doctor to test your stool for the signs of blood. But the safer the may be to get a good history and consider a colonoscopy.
