Infection: A viral respiratory infection can cause voice loss (laryngitis), cough and even discolored discharge. These symptoms should improve after 7-10 days and voice rest is typically needed for longer. If symptoms are not improving in that time frame, are worsening or abrupt onset of high fever, a secondary bacterial infection could be present. A physician can assess to see if antibiotics are needed.
